About Alex

Dr Alex Cumberworth BMBS BSc (Hons) FRCA (2018) EDRA (2024)

Alex is an experienced consultant anaesthetist with subspecialist interests in airway management and regional anaesthesia.


His medical training took place in Brighton, London and Oxford. He graduated in medicine from Brighton and Sussex Medical School with Distinction, and in Physiology from University College London with First Class Honours. He received a multitude of undergraduate prizes including the Dean's Prize, the Medical Women's Federation Women's Health Prize and the Ede & Ravenscroft Prize.


He has been practising as a consultant since 2022 and holds a full-time NHS position at Wexham Park Hospital, part of Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. He practises privately in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and central London.

Achievements And Expertise in Anaesthesia

Alex was proud to be awarded the Nuffield Medal in recognition of his performance in the Primary FRCA examination. This accolade is awarded to the top-performing candidate(s) in a given sitting. Following this he received a letter of commendation for his performance in the Final FRCA examination. He is one of a very small number of candidates to have been awarded FRCA with Distinction.


Alex has also undertaken intensive training in regional anaesthesia. In recognition of this expertise, he was awarded the European Diploma of Regional Anaesthesia in 2024. He is regularly invited to teach regional anaesthesia at workshops around the UK. His experience in this field means that he is well-placed to review cases involving complications of regional anaesthetic techniques.


In 2022 Alex co-authored a major study into complications of airway management in the Thames Valley, involving over 60 000 anaesthetics. This study was published in Anaesthesia and cited extensively by other literature. Alex’s regular anaesthetic practice incorporates all manner of airway challenges and his knowledge of anaesthetic clinical practice, guidelines and evidence gives him a solid foundation on which to review cases of airway complications.

Medicolegal Training

Alex is undergoing expert witness training through the Expert Witness Institute (EWI), of which he is an affiliate member.


The core training required by the EWI comprises:


  • Law for Experts (England and Wales)
  • Basics of Report Writing
  • Advanced Report Writing
  • Expert Discussions & Joint Statements


Through this training and his ongoing membership of the EWI, Alex is able to provide a high-quality service, stay up to date, work within his experience and fulfil his duty to the court under Section 35 of the Civil Procedure Rules.
